Colette Thomas brings a unique theatrical background to her work as a teacher and musical performer. Acclaimed for her distinctive dramatic gifts as well are her wide-ranging musical abilities, her achievements embrace cabaret performance, musical theatre, acting, vocal coaching, church soloist, arts education, lead singer in a pop band, voice-overs and theatrical producing and directing.
Colette is a professionally trained mezzo-soprano who has been an entertainer from the age of 13. Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania and raised in Stockton, California, she made her debut as the youngest practitioner of the oldest profession in her high school production of "Sweet Charity." At 19, Colette and her family moved to San Diego, California, where she received her B.A. degree in theatre arts from San Diego State University. Her musical repertoire embodies standards, Broadway musicals, and pop.
As a cabaret artist, Colette created, produced and performed her one-woman show, Lets Do It: An Evening with Cole Porter. The show, a part historical, part presentational musical tribute that included both familiar and rarely performed Porter songs, received standing ovations and drew wide critical acclaim. Colette says, "I, for one, have never been able to resist a Cole Porter lyric. He's simply the tops!" Colettes other one-woman musical show, Courage of the Heart, was inspired by her mothers losing battle with cancer. Colette explains, "I created the piece shortly after my mothers death in 2002, choosing songs with lyrics that illuminated her courage, even when the odds were against her. My mothers hope was amazing to witness, and through song I wanted to comfort others who might be experiencing similar fear at a time of loss."
Colette is pleased to carry on the tradition of singing passed down to her by her Great Aunt Lou, an accomplished vocalist and performer donning opera houses and stages across the country during the great vaudeville era. |
